28 The Colorado Trail

And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.

Romans 8:28 NASB

I would love to say that I have enjoyed riding the Colorado trail, but I can’t.  I didn’t get any farther than the trailhead above Durango, which was close to 12,000 ft. in altitude.  Since I have suffered with chronic asthma for most of my life, my lungs were taking in more oxygen than they were expelling CO2. Yes, carbon dioxide build-up is not a fun experience.  With every foot we gained to the trailhead, my lungs were screaming for air!  I had ridden a mile through flowers, over rocks, onto single-track gasping the entire time—only to succumb to my lifelong challenge, working to breathe. I had met my limit face to face.

Sadly, I turned back, having to miss my ride of the Colorado Trail.  Although the ride back took me over a bridge, by a waterfall, and down a steep, fast paved road, it was several minutes before a smile came back to my face.  I was battling my thoughts, most of the way down, and not until I was breathing in much needed oxygen, and sensing my levels had reached a fairly “normal” level, did I feel like myself again.

Eight hours later, when fellow riders returned, there were plenty of stories told of the awesome beauty, ups and downs of each canyon, and of the snow and ice of this small piece of Colorado. I was able to imagine the challenges and rewards this trail brought each rider and I enjoyed being a partaker in their story-telling. It’s no wonder mountain bikers from all over the world trek all, or part of Colorado Trail’s 200 miles!

Regardless of how I feel, there are times when it is best to pray, make my decisions, and then go with the outcome. The consequences may be difficult to withstand at times, but it’s the better person who makes a promise and keeps it whether for his good or not.  Thank you Lord for the care you offer over trivial, as well as, significant things. I see you at work in my life at every turn.

Challenge 27: Not everything that happens in life will be good; bad things happen to all of us.  Hard times befall each one of us.  When we put our trust in God, He works out all things for the good of His kingdom. It is comforting to know that along with our “good doings,” God works out our downfalls as well!  Today’s challenge is to trust Him, regardless.

I have learned a valuable lesson from this. Bad times teach. You pay to learn. Education you suffer for is far more impactful than the easy route. Thank the Lord for all the great education I have received over the years!
