This is why I remind you to fan into flames the spiritual gift God gave you…2 Timothy 1:6a NLT
Most mountain bikers have goals, and many of the goals are linked to a desire to become faster, more skilled, and fearless on the downhill. Sometimes that ambition can lead to a downside. Riding continuously, and eventually joining the race circuit may subtly draw a mountain biker away from the primary motivation for participating in this great sport. At least that how it was for me. Mountain biking began with having fun and experiencing the thrill of off-road cycling, and the rush of a hardcore trail. I enjoyed new friendships made while mountain biking, and gained a sense of camaraderie I had not experienced before.
I found that I had to come full-circle to where I first encountered the sport of mountain biking. I had to ask myself, “Why do I ride?” I needed to take some time away from competitive mountain biking and ride the trail for fun—without the nagging worry of how fast I rode, or who was ahead of or behind me. I needed to scream a little “wahoo,” wear a smile, get some bugs in my teeth and laugh about it. I needed to skin my knees, get up and move on. After all, there are enough things in life to be anxious about—why not let mountain biking be a reprieve from the demands of the everyday, rather than make it one more worry?
Lord God. Thank you for this great sport you lead me into. It has made me feel a passion for life, given me a tool to step out in faith and helped me to some take risks. Remind me everyday of the why. I began with a love of being on my mountain bike and riding on dirt. Bring me back to it; set my feet straight, and cause me to know your presence in it.
Challenge 3: Think back to a time when your heart was ignited with a passion for life and the fire of God. Ask him to rekindle your love for Him and your love for people; after all, you already love riding!
Before you move on, jot down a line or two about challenge 3. What part of it could you relate to? How will you respond to the challenge today?
